Ovarian Cysts are common, there are literally dozens of types of these growths. The old theory was that cysts need to removed surgically, but now that old advice has been called into question.
If you have an ovarian cyst that doesn’t appear to be suspicious for actual ovarian cancer your gyno may tell you to undergo watchful waiting. A new study from Lancet helps you determine what your risks are if you do select to be patient and not undergo surgery for the cyst.
- Most cysts will resolve on their own
- Most cysts will not cause pain or irregular vaginal bleeding so there is little need to even do much monitoring
- Ultrasound testing is what you will need to rely on to determine resolution
- You may need to be patient for upwards of 3 years for the cyst to resolve; and over 20% do completely go away
- Some cysts will actually never resolve. Especially if they are from endometriosis.
- The cysts that aren’t thought to be cancerous are only found to be cancerous in less than 1% of cases
- There is only a 1% chance the cyst will either twist, a condition called torsion, or rupture
- If you are pregnancy planning, or have painful intercourse, or unscheduled vaginal bleeding you should see your gyno for an evaluation
- Having a cyst is not the same as having PCOS, ask your gynecologist for an explanation
