3. When we are healthy we make approximately 10,000,000,000 red blood cells are produced PER HOUR in the bone marrow to keep our blood count, known as hematocrit, stable. Because smoking robs us of oxygen it was thought that the blood stimulating factor Erythropoietin (EPO) would be higher in smokers. However, EPO is reduced in smokers, making it less likely to be able to have optimal oxygen when we work out.
